Varanasi is intense. But gets even more intense during the Shivaratri, a Hindu religious festival that celebrates the day that Shiva ended the fight between Brahma and Vishnu, bringing light and peace to humanity.
Being one of the most important festivals Hindu, Shivaratri attracts thousands of pilgrims to Varanasi, one of the holiest places in India.
As a celebration of light, this festival is celebrated also during the night, with pilgrims keeping a vigil to visit temples scattered along the old city, making this night one of the busiest of the year. But during the day is time for “puja”, for the holy bath in Ganga and to watch the several parades, where children dress up invoking Shiva’s life events.
